D’Anjou Pear Tree

Advanced Nursery Growers

$80.00

D’Anjou Pear Tree is a classic European pear variety known for producing large, attractive green pears with firm, smooth flesh and a mild, sweet flavor. Unlike Bartlett pears, the fruit generally remains green as it ripens, sometimes developing a slight yellow tint.

The rounded, egg-shaped pears are excellent for fresh eating, baking, poaching, canning, salads, and holiday recipes. Their firm texture also makes D’Anjou pears especially useful for cooking and storing.

D’Anjou is considered partially self-fertile, but it normally produces a larger and more dependable crop when another compatible European pear blooms nearby.

PLANT DETAILS

• Botanical name: Pyrus communis ‘D’Anjou’
• Common names: D’Anjou Pear, Green Anjou Pear
• Pear type: European winter pear
• Fruit size: Medium to large
• Fruit color: Green, usually remaining green when ripe
• Flavor: Mild, sweet, and slightly citrus-like
• Texture: Firm, smooth, and juicy when properly ripened
• Harvest season: Late summer through fall, depending on climate
• Mature size: Approximately 15–20 feet tall and wide, depending on rootstock and pruning
• Sun requirements: Full sun
• Soil: Fertile, well-drained soil
• Pollination: Partially self-fertile, but another compatible pear is recommended
• Best uses: Fresh eating, baking, poaching, canning, salads, desserts, and storage

HARVESTING AND RIPENING

D’Anjou pears should generally be harvested when they are mature but still firm. Like other European pears, they develop their best texture and flavor when allowed to finish ripening after harvest rather than becoming fully soft on the tree.

Check ripeness by gently pressing near the neck of the pear. The fruit is ready to eat when the neck gives slightly under gentle pressure.

POLLINATION

D’Anjou may produce some fruit when planted alone, but cross-pollination normally improves fruit set and overall production.

Compatible European pear partners may include:

• Bartlett Pear
• Bosc Pear
• Comice Pear
• Seckel Pear

The varieties must bloom at approximately the same time. Seasonal temperatures and local climate can affect bloom overlap.

NORTH FLORIDA GROWING NOTE

D’Anjou is not considered a dependable pear variety for North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, or other warm and humid Gulf Coast areas.

It is a traditional European pear that performs best in regions with colder winters and generally drier growing conditions. D’Anjou is also susceptible to fire blight, a bacterial disease that can be especially damaging to pear trees during warm, wet spring weather.

For customers near DeFuniak Springs and throughout the Florida Panhandle, Southern-adapted pears such as Orient, Hood, Flordahome, Baldwin, Kieffer, Pineapple, LeConte, Ayers, or Southern King are usually better choices.

Avoid excessive nitrogen fertilizer and overly aggressive pruning because rapid, tender growth is more vulnerable to fire blight.
