Originating in Escambia County, Alabama, near the Florida Panhandle, this old Gulf Coast variety was once grown commercially and shipped by rail to northern markets.

Shell Apple is particularly valuable for Southern growers because it has a long history of producing in warm, humid, relatively low-chill climates. UF/IFAS reports that Shell of Alabama has produced in Florida and flowers at approximately the same time as established low-chill Florida apple cultivars.

The fruit is generally medium-sized with crisp flesh and a distinctive flavor that combines sweet and tart notes. Historically, Shell apples were harvested during the summer, making this an excellent choice for gardeners wanting an early Southern apple with genuine regional history.
