Buy Dunstan Chestnut Trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida. Dunstan Chestnuts are seed-grown hybrid chestnut trees developed from American and Chinese Chestnut parentage. They combine desirable American Chestnut characteristics with the adaptability, nut production, and improved chestnut-blight resistance of selected Chinese Chestnuts.
Dunstan Chestnuts produce large, sweet, easy-to-peel nuts that are excellent for eating, roasting, baking, wildlife plantings, and food plots. These vigorous trees also make attractive additions to home orchards, farms, nut groves, and large landscapes.
These are seed-grown trees, so each tree is genetically different. Plant at least two Dunstan Chestnut seedlings within pollinating distance for dependable cross-pollination and nut production.
Plant Details:
Seed-Grown Tree Note:
Dunstan Chestnuts are grown from seed rather than being genetically identical grafted clones. Individual seedlings may vary in mature size, growth habit, nut size, harvest time, and production. This genetic variation also allows two different Dunstan seedlings to cross-pollinate one another.
North Florida Growing Note:
Dunstan Chestnuts are well suited to the Florida Panhandle when planted in full sun and well-drained soil. Dunstan Chestnuts have a history of successful growth and nut production in Florida and other areas of the southeastern United States.
Choose an elevated planting location where rainwater does not collect around the roots. Chestnut trees do not tolerate wet feet, standing water, heavy waterlogged soil, or prolonged flooding.
North Florida’s sandy soil may benefit from organic matter and a light layer of mulch over the root zone. Keep mulch several inches away from the trunk. Water young trees consistently during their first few growing seasons, especially during hot or dry weather.
Plant at least two genetically different Dunstan Chestnut seedlings for cross-pollination. Position the trees approximately 30–40 feet apart where possible. Chestnuts are primarily wind-pollinated, so the trees should be planted close enough for pollen to travel between them.
Chestnuts fall inside extremely sharp, spiny burs. Plant trees away from sidewalks, patios, driveways, playgrounds, livestock gathering areas, and locations where people frequently walk barefoot.
