Shinko Asian Pear

The Shinko Asian Pear is a vigorous and productive variety, prized for its crisp, juicy fruit and natural disease resistance. The fruit is rounded with attractive golden-bronze skin, while the flesh inside is yellowish-white, crisp, and very juicy, offering a rich, sweet flavor that makes it excellent for fresh eating, salads, and preserves.

Shinko pears are also valued for their outstanding storage ability, keeping for 2–3 months without losing their flavor or crunch. This makes them an excellent choice for home gardeners who want fresh fruit well beyond harvest season.

The tree itself is hardy, vigorous, and naturally resistant to fire blight, one of the most common pear diseases. At maturity, it grows 18–20 feet tall with a spread of 12–15 feet. For best yields, plant trees about 30 feet apart. Shinko is partially self-fertile, but will produce heavier crops when pollinated by compatible varieties such as Bartlett, Kieffer, or Shinseiki.

With a chill requirement of 400–500 hours, Shinko thrives in zones 5a–9a. In the warmer parts of zones 8 and 9, it benefits from partial afternoon shade to reduce stress and maintain fruit quality. Harvest comes in late fall, providing a crisp, flavorful treat after many other fruits are finished for the season.
