North Florida Growing Note

Sungold is a University of Florida nectarine that was specifically introduced for North Florida.

Its approximately 550-hour chilling requirement makes it especially suited to the cooler portions of North Florida and the Florida Panhandle.

Because winter chill can vary from year to year and by location, fruit production can also vary. Inland areas of the Florida Panhandle generally have a better chance of receiving sufficient winter chilling than warmer areas farther south.

Sungold is an older cultivar and has largely been replaced in commercial production by newer Florida nectarines, but it can still be a very good choice for North Florida home orchards and local fruit production.

Fruit Quality

Sungold produces attractive nectarines with a heavy bright-red blush over yellow skin. The yellow flesh is juicy, sweet, and flavorful.

The fruit becomes freestone when fully ripe and was originally noted for excellent dessert quality.

Fruit thinning is recommended when trees set heavily. Removing some of the young fruit helps the remaining nectarines develop better size and quality.

Pollination

Sungold Nectarine is self-fruitful, so only one tree is required to produce fruit.

Another peach or nectarine blooming nearby may increase pollinator activity, but a second variety is not required for fruit production.

Growing Sungold Nectarine

Plant Sungold in a location receiving full sun with well-drained soil.

Good air circulation is especially important in North Florida's warm, humid climate.

Annual pruning helps maintain an open canopy, encourages new fruiting wood, and improves sunlight and air circulation throughout the tree.

Like peaches and other nectarines grown in the Southeast, Sungold benefits from a regular disease and insect management program.
