The Kieffer Pear is a hardy and productive hybrid of the European pear and Chinese sand pear, well-loved for its adaptability and reliable harvests. The tree produces large, bright yellow fruit with firm, crisp white flesh. The texture is slightly coarse, yet very juicy, with a mild, refreshing flavor. Kieffer pears are especially popular for canning, preserves, and baking, but can also be enjoyed fresh when fully ripe.
This variety is highly valued for its toughness and ability to thrive where other pears may struggle. It shows excellent heat tolerance, making it ideal for southern orchards, and is one of the most disease-resistant pears, including good resistance to fire blight. Kieffer pears typically ripen in late September through October, providing a dependable late-season harvest.
The Kieffer Pear tree grows to about 15–20 feet tall with a spread of 10–15 feet. While somewhat self-fertile, planting two trees or pairing with another pear variety will ensure optimal pollination and heavier yields.
