Why Grow UF Sun Peach?
UF Sun is particularly valuable for growers who need a peach with a very low chilling requirement. UF/IFAS reports that the cultivar produces heavy annual crops of early-season fruit and has been popular because of its high yield and fruit quality.
Because UF Sun requires only about 100 chill hours, it can bloom quite early. In colder parts of North Florida, early blooms may occasionally be vulnerable to late-winter freezes. UF/IFAS notes that choosing a cultivar with a chilling requirement that is too low for a location can increase the risk of frost damage to blossoms and young fruit.
Pollination
UF Sun Peach is self-fertile and does not require another peach tree for pollination. Planting another peach cultivar with overlapping bloom times may help increase overall pollinator activity in the orchard.
