Black Mission Fig Tree
Buy Black Mission Fig Trees for sale at Advanced Nursery Growers in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
Enjoy rich, sweet figs with deep purple-black skin and reddish-pink flesh. Black Mission is a classic variety for fresh eating, preserves, baking, and drying. Its large, lobed leaves add tropical appeal to a sunny home orchard or patio garden.
Plant Details:
Plant Type: Deciduous fruit tree.
Botanical Name: Ficus carica ‘Mission’.
Mature Size: Approximately 15–30 feet tall with a broad, spreading canopy; pruning can maintain a smaller size.
Sun: Full sun for best fruit production.
USDA Zones: Best in mild-winter climates; winter protection is important in colder locations, including North Florida Zone 8b.
Chill Hours: Low chilling requirement.
Bloom/Harvest: Flowers develop inside the figs. Main harvest occurs in summer into fall; an earlier crop may develop on overwintered wood when conditions allow.
Fruit: Purple-black skin, reddish-pink flesh, and a rich, sweet flavor.
Pollination: Self-fruitful. One tree can produce fruit; no second variety or fig wasp is required.
Soil/Water: Plant in well-drained soil. Water regularly during establishment and dry periods; avoid standing water.
Landscape Uses: Home orchards, edible landscapes, and large containers with regular pruning.
North Florida Growing Note:
Black Mission is less cold hardy than commonly grown Southern figs such as Celeste and Brown Turkey. In the Florida Panhandle, plant in a warm, sheltered location and protect young trees during freezes. Cold damage can reduce the following season’s harvest. Container growing allows the plant to be moved to shelter during severe cold.
