The AU Rosa Plum is an attractive Japanese-type plum developed through Auburn University’s fruit breeding program for the Southeast. It produces beautiful round red plums with light yellow flesh and good eating quality. The fruit is approximately 2 inches across and typically ripens around mid-June.

AU Rosa is also valued for its resistance to plum leaf scald, an important benefit for plum growers in the humid Southeast.

AU Rosa is a higher-chill plum, requiring approximately 750 chill hours. Because of this, it is best suited to colder locations in North Florida, the Florida Panhandle, South Alabama, and similar areas that receive adequate winter chill. It should not be considered one of our most dependable low-chill Florida plums.

  • Mature Size: Approximately 12–20 feet tall and wide if unpruned; can be maintained smaller with regular pruning

North Florida Growing Note

AU Rosa is not a low-chill plum. With a chilling requirement of approximately 750 hours, fruit production may vary from year to year in warmer parts of the Florida Panhandle.

For customers wanting some of the most dependable lower-chill plums for our area, we recommend looking first at varieties such as Gulf Beauty, Gulf Blaze, and Gulf Rose.
